Sindhu off to winning start at India Open

New Delhi, Jan 11 : Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu had a winning start at the India Open Super 500 badminton tournament in New Delhi Today.

Sindhu defeated her compatriot Sri Krishna Priya 21-5, 21-16 in straight sets to enter the second round of the super 500 tournament at the KD Jadhav Indoor stadium.

Speaking about playing against the fellow Indian, the ace shuttler said: “I played with her long time back. I was taking the lead and finish it off.

“The first match is always important because when playing for the first time in that stadium on the first day you have to make sure you get used to the strokes and everything. I just went through the flow, maintained the lead to finish it off.”

“I need to tune my grim more and work on my skills and also learn new weapons, because everybody going to read your game one or other time,” she said about her performance.

“It is very important to keep changing it every single time when you play against that player. They use to watch your previous matches and they know what needs to be done. You need to strategise accordingly.”

“I think there is a lot of things to work on because when it comes to skill and physical fitness, they have to be much more stronger and skills wise they need to improve a lot. Not only against me but when they play at the international level; that should be there from every youngster.”

Reflecting on busy schedule the shuttler emphasised on staying fit for the upcoming major events.

“Last year, there was a long stretch where we have continuous tournaments like world championships back to back; and this year Commomwealth Games and Asian Games are also gonna be there. So I have to stay injury-free and make sure to train harder and be fit,” she added.(UNI)
