NEW DELHI, AUG 4 : The Indian Men’s Hockey team has secured a place in the semifinals of the Paris Olympics 2024, delivering a stunning performance in a quarterfinal clash against Great Britain on Sunday.

This victory, achieved amid a dramatic shootout, has been celebrated not just for its athletic brilliance but also for the divine intervention that many believe played a crucial role.

Reeta Upadhyay, mother of Indian hockey player Lalit Upadhyay, has attributed the team’s success to divine blessings. She had been fervently praying to Bhole Nath, Lord Shiva, for the team’s victory.

“I was praying to Bhole Nath for the team’s victory,” Reeta Upadhyay said, “Even when the match was a draw, my faith did not waver. When the game reached the shootout and we won, it was a moment of immense joy. I prayed to Kashi Vishwanath to bless the team till the finals. I told Lalit – we want to see a Gold medal.”

The match was marked by intense drama as the Indian team, playing with only 10 players due to a red card, managed to secure a victory. The squad’s defensive prowess and strategic play were pivotal in overcoming the numerical disadvantage and winning the shootout.

Lalit’s father, Satish Upadhyay, expressed his pride and optimism: “I am thrilled. Even with one player down, the team fought valiantly and emerged victorious. We are hopeful for a medal of a different color this time. My blessings are with the team.”

Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey lauded the team’s historic achievement: “Playing with only 10 players for 45 minutes was a tremendous challenge. Despite the odds, the team showcased remarkable resilience and defensive skill. This victory highlights their determination and capability.”

The anticipation for a Gold medal is palpable, with PR Sreejesh’s wife, Aneeshya, expressing high hopes: “As this is Sreejesh’s final Olympics, expectations are soaring. After a Bronze medal in the previous Games, we are optimistic for a Gold this time.”

Coach GS Sangh commended the collective effort of the team: “Despite the challenge of competing with 10 players for 42 minutes, the team’s performance, particularly in the shootout, was exemplary. This win reflects the dedication and teamwork of every player.”

Former Indian Hockey player Ashok Kumar highlighted the team’s exceptional performance: “The Indian team’s ability to win the quarterfinals with just 10 players is a testament to their readiness for Gold. PR Sreejesh’s goalkeeping was instrumental in this victory.”
