India Open: Sindhu, Lakshya enter semis

New Delhi, Jan 14 : Former world champion P V Sindhu sailed into the semifinal of India Open Super 500 tournament here Today.

In the men’s singles, world championships bronze medallist Lakshya Sen outplayed H S Prannoy 14-21, 21-9, 21-14 to also storm into the last four.

Sindhu defeated compatriot Ashmita Chaliha 21-7, 21-18 in a quarterfinal clash. The former world champion will lock horns with Supanida Katethong of Thailand in the semis.

The first game was a one-sided affair as Sindhu took a 8-2 lead. In between Chaliha managed to get a few points.

Sindhu didn’t let Chaliha reduce the gap and went to the breather with six a point cushion at 11-5.

Post break, the youngster from Guwahati earned a couple of points but that wasn’t enough as Sindhu continued to showcase her class and wrapped up the first set 21-7 in 11 minutes.

The second game was tough as Chaliha gave a good fight and made Sindhu sweat. Sindhu held a one-point advantage by the time she went on to the mid-game break.

Chaliha saved two match points before Sindhu took the second set 21-18 to enter the semis.

In the men’s singles, after losing the first set 14-21, Sen showcased a stunning comeback by clinching the second set 21-7 and forced the decider.

In the final game, Sen held Prannoy in a thriller and won in 59 minutes 21-14.

Sen will face the winner of the match between Tze Yong of Malaysia and Nhat Nguyen of Ireland in the semifinal.(UNI)
