India look to seal ODI series against WI

Ahmedabad, Feb 8 : After a comfortable 6-wicket victory in the first ODI, India will aim to seal the series in the second game here at the Narendra Modi Stadium on February 9. India, on the back of a 0-3 loss to South Africa, “ticked all the boxes” to dominate the first ODI against West Indies. The match saw the spinners and middle order stepping up. “We ticked all the boxes in the first game and we’ll try to repeat the same. It’s always a challenge to repeat what we’d done in the first encounter. So, let’s see, really looking forward to it,” said Suryakumar Yadav on the eve of second game. The task to finalise the team’s combination will be challenging for captain Rohit Sharma, with KL Rahul returning to the setup. Rahul could open in Ishan Kishan’s place despite the latter’s good enough outing in the first game. The pitch, as described by West Indies fast bowler Alzarri Joseph, was “slow and spin friendly” which makes run-scoring difficult. Both Yuzvendra Chahal and Washington Sundar shared seven wickets to skittle out West Indies. West Indies will have to come up with a solid plan as the three-match series is part of the ICC World Cup Super League and they are on the eighth position. India, being the hosts, have automatically qualified for the 2023 event. Apart from Jason Holder and Fabian Allen, no other West Indies player could manage to score against the India spinners. Holder and Allen gave the visitors a good partnership after the team’s collapse. West Indies would need more of it, especially from the top order. However, the statistics favour India as they haven’t lost to West Indies in an ODI bilateral series since 2006. If India secure the series, it would affect West Indies’ chances of making the automatic qualification spot in the Super League. India squad: Rohit Sharma (c), KL Rahul (vc), Mayank Agarwal, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli, Surya Kumar Yadav, Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan (wk), Deepak Hooda, Rishabh Pant (wk), Deepak Chahar, Shardul Thakur, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Washington Sundar, Ravi Bishnoi, Mohd. Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Avesh Khan, Shahrukh Khan.
