BWF WC’ships: Prannoy, Ashwini-Sikki storms into pre-quarters
Huelva (Spain), Dec 15 :HS Prannoy and women’s doubles pair of Ashwini Ponappa and Sikki Reddy reached BWF World Championships pre-quarterfinals after their respective round of 32 wins here Today.
In the men’s singles, Prannoy outclassed his Malaysian opponent Liew Daren in straight sets by 21-7, 21-17 to to go through to the pre quarter-finals.
The Indian shuttler showcased a dominating performance to take the opening set by 21-7. Prannoy continued to display his impressive form in the second set, as he allowed the Malaysian to return to the match and sealed the deal by taking the second game, 21-17.
The women’s doubles pair of Ashwini-Sikki stunned 14th seeds Chinese duo of Liu Xuan Xuan/Xia Yu Ting in a decider by 21-11, 9-21, 21-13.
The India duo pocketed the first game by 21-11, but the Chinese showcased terrific comeback as they turned face of the match by taking the second set with an ease by 21-9, and forced the decider.
In a deciding game, Ashwini-Sikki showcased an impressive performance, as they were much better at the net.The Chinese duo tried to swing the momentum but the Indians were too good for them as they took the decider by 21-13 and booked their spot in the pre-quarters.
However, the Indian men’s doubles pair of MR Arjun and Dhruv Kapila bowed out in round-32, after the duo suffered a defeat at the hands of Vladimir Ivanov and Ivan Sozonov of Russia by 22-21, 16-21.
The ace Indian shuttler PV Sindhu, young Laskshya Sen, men’s doubles pair of Satwik Sairaj-Chirag Shetty and former World no. 1 Kidambi Srikanth have already fixed their place in the pre-quarterfinals on Tuesday.(UNI)
