AFC Cup: Gokulam Kerala up against Maziya challenge

Kolkata, May 20 : After a spectacular display in the AFC Cup opener, Gokulam Kerala FC may be up against a tougher opponent in Maziya Sports & Recreation Club during their Group D exchange at Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan Stadium here on Saturday. On the other hand, the opening day 1-0 defeat to Bangladesh’s Bashundhara Kings means another loss on Saturday will end Maziya’s hopes with a match to spare. The match promises to be another stiff test for the Maldives side with Gokulam Kerala having impressed in their 4-2 win against fellow Indian side ATK Mohun Bagan on Matchday One. Head coach Miodrag Jesic said Maziya are ready to bounce back against Gokulam Kerala. “The mood in the team is good, although we are expecting a very tough match tomorrow. We will try to win. I think we played a good game against Basundhara but what we need to do against Gokulam is minimise our mistakes and convert our chances,” said Jesic. The gaffer said he has full faith in his players’ abilities to keep their AFC Cup hopes alive. “We have a very good team, there is a good relationship between the players and the staff We know Gokulam are in good form and are a very good side. However, if we can minimise our errors, victory will be ours.” Head coach Vincenzo Alberto Annese said his Gokulam Kerala side has to be focused to deal with Maziya’s threat. “We will face a team who have rich experience in this competition. They have players who have stayed with the team for a long time and they have national players. We studied them, they have quality in the middle, they have good pace and they try to give a lot of trouble to defensive lines,” said Annese. Staying focused, said Annese, would be key in Gokulam Kerala’s bid for a second win. “We only have a chance to play them once and it is important to maintain concentration. When you play after 72 hours, the physical and mental levels go down, it is crucial to maintain concentration. We have developed a system of playing attacking and attractive football. In the past several years, I haven’t seen many teams in India play this way. We love to attack. We will play to win.”(UNI)
