France defeats Austria 1-0 in the UEFA Euro 2024.
DUSSELDORF (GERMANY), JUNE 18 : France began their UEFA EURO 2024 campaign with a 1-0 win against Austria, courtesy of an own goal by Austrian defender Maximilian Wober, who deflected a Kylian Mbappe cross into his own net.
France, aiming for their fourth final in the last five major tournaments, encountered a determined Austrian side from the start. Early in the match, Adrien Rabiot set up Mbappe, whose shot forced a save from Austrian goalkeeper Patrick Pentz.
Theo Hernandez later sent a dangerous delivery across the goal, but Austria’s defensive intensity prevented further French chances. Austria almost scored when Christoph Baumgartner was denied by French goalkeeper Mike Maignan after a flick from Marcel Sabitzer.
The breakthrough came when Mbappe’s quick movement allowed him to send a cross that Wober inadvertently headed into his own net. Mbappe, who later exited the game with a nose injury, missed a chance to extend the lead in the second half, curling a shot wide after beating Wober.
Austria pushed for an equalizer, leaving gaps that France tried to exploit. Antoine Griezmann narrowly missed connecting with a cross, and Marcus Thuram had a shot saved. Ultimately, France’s single goal and strong defense were enough to secure the victory.(UNI)
