National level multi-class youth sailing championship flagged off at KRS backwaters

Mysuru, Aug 27 : The national-level sailing championship bought off to a vibrant begin at Krishna Raj Sagar dam (KRS dam) Today.
The Madras Engineers Group (MEG) of the Indian Army in collaboration with General Thimayya National Academy of Adventure has jointly organised the “National Level Multi-Class Youth Sailing Championship” from the 27th to 31st August 2021 at KRS Dam in Mandya District under the aegis of Yachting Association of Karnataka and Yachting Association of India.
This is the first Sailing Championship of National magnitude to be held at KRS Dam, Mandya. The Opening Ceremony of the event was held today at KRS back waters. The event was graced by Narayan Gowda, the Sports Minister of Karnataka as the chief guest. Brigadier T P S Wadhava, Commandant MEG and Center, Major General M S Pillai, SM (Retired), Vice President of the Yachting Association of India were present at the inauguration along with other dignitaries.
More than 100 sailors from across the country participated in the inaugural sailing parade. The sailing races are to commence from 28 Aug and continue till 30th August.
The events will be held in different classes:
1. 29er Class
2. Laser Radial Class
3. Laser 4.7 Class
4. RS: One class
5. Optimist main fleet
6. Optimist green fleet
The Madras Engineers Group (MEG) of the Indian Army has been at the forefront producing elite sportsmen across all disciplines for the country through decades. Their main aim is to produce quality sportsmen for the Olympic National Squad and the Count Goes on for the Next “Mission Olympics”.
The General Thimayya National Academy of Adventure was founded in the year 1989 and has been producing National and International level athletes in Sport climbing, Kayaking and Canoeing. Therefore “National Level Multi Class Youth Sailing Championship” will be a new beginning for Sailing at the academy. The academy intends to capitalise from the experience and build a strong team to pursue this sport in competitions.
The event was not open for general public keeping in mind COVID safety measures and safety of the sailors. The event was organised following all Covid-19 protocols.(UNI)
