BERLIN, JAN 8    :    German football legend and 1974 World Cup champion Franz Beckenbauer has died at the age of 78, the Deutsche Presse-Agentur news agency reported on Monday, citing the athlete’s family.

The former football player and manager reportedly died on Sunday.

Aside from the 1974 World Cup, Beckenbauer also won the UEFA Euro 1972 with the West German team. As part of the Bayern Munich football club, he won the German championship four times and the European Champions Cup (currently known as the UEFA Champions League) three times. Beckenbauer is a two-time Ballon d’Or winner.(UNI)
