TN false alcohol catastrophe toll reaches 21

Chennai, May 16 : Chennai, May 16 : The toll in Sunday’s twin spurious liquor tragedies
in Tamil Nadu rose to 21, with the death of two more people on Tuesday
evening.
The incidents took place at Ekkiyarkuppam fishing hamlet at Marakkanam
in Villuppuram district and at Perunkaranai village near Madurantakam in
Chengalpattu district.
While a total of 14 people died in the Marakkanam incident, five had died
in the Chengalpattu tragedy.
Police sources said two more people, who had consumed the liquor
in the Chengalpattu incident and was undergoing treatment at the
Chengalpattu government hospital, died this evening.
They were identified as Jambu and Shankar, both hailing from Perunkanarani
village.
With this the number of deaths in the Chengalpattu tragedy went up
to seven.
A total of seven people have died since last evening. Of them five were
involved in Marakkanam incident and died at Villuppuram Government
Medical College Hospital at Mundiyambakkam, two succumbed at the
Chengalpattu hospital, taking the number of deaths from 14 to 21.
The sources said 35 others affected in the Marakkanam incident wer
undergoing treatment at the Villuppuram hospital, three at Jipmer in
Puducherry and one at Puducherry Government General hospital.
Five others were being treated at the Chengalpattu government hospital.
Meanwhile, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) issued a
notice to the Tamil Nadu government seeking a report on the spurious
liquor deaths.
Taking congizance of the incident, the NHRC directed the Chief Secretary
and the Director General of Police to file a report within four weeks and
on the action taken in connection with the incident.
In a related development, polie citing laboratory tests said the deaths
have caused due to consumption of methanol and not due to illicit
arrack/liquor.
