TN: After visiting the flood-affected Thoothukudi district, Nirmala Sitharaman preside over a review meeting.
THOOTHUKUDI (TAMIL NADU), DEC 26 : Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday visited the flood-affected Thoothukudi and assessed the damages caused by unprecedented torrential rains that lashed the Southern district on December 17 and 18.
Sitharaman, accompanied by Union Minister of State L.Murugan and senior government officials inspected Kurunji Nagar, Srivaikuntam, Eral, Korampallam among the worst-hit areas in the flood and interacted with the affected people and traders.
Earlier, the Finance Minsiter chaired a review meeting at Thoothukudi Collectorate and discussed the damages, relief and restoration works.
Tamil Nadu Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu and Thoothukudi Member of Parliament K.Kanimozhi and senior government officials also present in the meeting.
The district officials briefed Mrs.Nirmala about the extensive damages caused by the flood in the district through a photo exhibition.
Mr.Thennarasu handed over a memorandum underscoring the critical need for funds in response, relief and restoration efforts to Mrs.Nirmala.
Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu government sought substantial assistance from the Union Government to confront unprecedented natural calamities.
Chief Minister M.K.Stalin in a post on X (formerly Twitter) today said having weathered 50 cyclones in the past century, Tamil Nadu, with the second-largest coastline in India, remains under constant threat.
Recent torrential rainfall in Southern districts adds to the woes post Cyclone Michaung.
The State Finance Minister, Thoothukudi MP and senior officials briefed Nirmala Sitaraman about the current situation and relief works carried out by the Government of Tamil Nadu.
They handed over a comprehensive 72-page memorandum underscoring the critical need for funds in response, relief, and restoration efforts.
With only limited funds available under SDRF, the damage far exceeds the current resources.
Tamil Nadu earnestly seeks substantial assistance from the Union Government to confront these unprecedented challenges, Thennarasu said.(UNI)
