Telangana receives 46 pc more rainfall during the water year 2020-21

Hyderabad, Apr 1: The Telangana State has received 46 percent more rainfall during the water year 2020-21 as compared to normal annual rainfall up to March-2021.

The state has received actual rainfall of 1262 mm against 865 mm of normal rainfall up to March 31, 2021, and it ranges from 864 mm (Nalgonda Dist) to 2064 mm (Mulugu).

Ground Water Department monitored water levels during March-2021 through 973 Piezometers (monitoring stations) covering all mandals from 33 districts of Telangana State, a release here said on Thursday.

Twenty-seven districts– Kamareddy, Suryapet, Peddapally, Nalgonda, Khammam, Sangareddy, Medak, Yadadri, Sircilla, Vikarabad, Bhupalpally, Mahabubabad, Karimnagar, Medchal, Jangaon, Mulugu, Nagarkurnool, Bhadradri, Hyderabad, Rangareddy, Warangal (R), Mahabubnagar, Siddipet, Warangal (U), Jogulamba (Gadwal), Narayanpet and Wanaparthy (+20 percent to 130 percent) received Excess rainfall and the remaining six districts received Normal rainfall (-17 to 6 percent).

Average groundwater levels in the State during March-2021 was 8.35 meters below ground level (m bgl) and it varies from 3.50 m bgl (Wanaparthy) to 14.87 m bgl (Medak). Out of 33 districts only in one district average water level is < 5 m bgl, in 24 districts between 5-10 m bgl and in the remaining 8 districts it is >10 m bgl.

A net rise in groundwater level of 2.16 m is observed during March-2021 as compared to March -2020 and the rise is observed in 27 districts and fall in other 6 districts. A minimum rise of 0.15 m is observed in Komaram-Bheem Asifabad district and a maximum rise of 8.11 m in Sangareddy district. A minimum fall of 0.09 m is observed in Bhupalapally and a maximum fall of -1.16 m in Jagityal district.

A net average rise of 2.93 m in groundwater levels is observed during March -2021 as compared to May-2020 and rise is observed in 30 districts (0.19 m Adilabad to 8.92 m in Sangareddy) and fall is observed in the remaining 3 districts (Bhupalapally, Jagityal, Nizamabad), the release added. (UNI)
