Telangana CM Forms Commission for SC Caste Classification
HYDERABAD, OCT 9 :Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has directed officials to promptly appoint a one-member commission to implement the Supreme Court’s verdict on SC caste classification and ensure the commission submits its report within 60 days.
During a review meeting at the state secretariat on Wednesday, the Chief Minister emphasized that new notifications would be issued in the state following the submission of the commission’s report.
Ministers Uttam Kumar Reddy and Damodara Raja Narasimha, members of the Cabinet sub-committee on SC classification, discussed various complaints regarding SC classification, along with the implementation strategies from Punjab and Tamil Nadu and the steps being taken in Haryana, an official statement said.
To avoid legal complications, it was decided to form a commission led by a former High Court judge, tasked with delivering its report within 60 days. The commission will consider the 2011 population figures for SC calculations. The Chief Minister instructed the Chief Secretary to ensure that all necessary information is gathered from various departments for the commission.
The meeting also analyzed requests received by the cabinet sub-committee regarding caste classification and regrouping in the state, with plans to forward all requests to the one-member commission. CM Revanth Reddy directed the commission to visit each of the ten districts to gather appeals and complaints from the field.
Additionally, the Chief Minister ordered the immediate commencement of the BC social, economic, and caste survey process in Telangana. Officials provided insights into the procedures followed by states like Bihar and Karnataka for similar surveys. BC Commission Chairman Niranjan requested the state government to facilitate this process, citing a lack of necessary mechanisms.
In response, CM Revanth Reddy confirmed that the state planning department would oversee the survey, assigning Principal Secretary Shanti Kumari to appoint a senior IAS officer as the coordinator for the BC Commission. The Chief Minister set a deadline for completing the social and economic survey within 60 days, with a report due by December 9, stating that local bodies could hold elections immediately after the survey’s completion.
