Srinagar, Pahalgam coldest in Kashmir as mercury dips further

Srinagar, Dec 1 : Cold conditions continue in the Kashmir Valley and Ladakh region Today with Srinagar and Pahalgam recording the coldest night of the season. The MeT has forecast dry weather for both union territories.

The night temperature in Srinagar was recorded at minus 2.5 degrees Celsius against the minus 1.5 on Tuesday.

Foggy conditions were reported from several places, including the famous Dal Lake and Boulevard Road.

The MeT office said the tourist resort of Pahalgam in south Kashmir also witnessed the coldest night of the season, where the minimum temperature dipped to minus 5.2 degrees Celsius against minus 3.3 a day ago. Intense cold breeze continue to prevail with most of the small water bodies frozen.

In Ladakh, at Air Force station Drass, the mercury showed slight improvement.

It was minus 10.8 degrees Celsius in Drass, against the minus 11.4 a day ago. In Leh, it dipped to minus 11.9 degrees Celsius from minus 9.7 degrees, while Kargil continued to be at minus 7.4 degrees Celsius for a second consecutive day.

Gulmarg in north Kashmir showed slight improvement in night temperature. It was minus 1.6 degrees Celsius in the ski resort, after recording minus 1.7 degrees a day ago.

Freezing cold conditions and thick fog played spoilsports for tourists flocking the resort.

Qazigund, on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway, recorded minus 3.3 degrees Celsius against the minus 1.4 degrees; while Kokernag recorded minus 1.8 degrees Celsius against the minus 0.9 degrees. Both showed dip in night temperatures.

In frontier Kashmir district of Kupwara, the minimum temperature further plunged to minus 3.5 degrees Celsius against the minus 2.4 degrees recorded a day back, the MeT office said.(UNI)
