Hyderabad was once surrounded by stone walls; after the conquest of Golconda by the Mughals, the walls were pulled down and new walls were
constructed.

A large portion of these walls was washed away in the 1908 floods; out of the 13 gates only Puranapul Darwaza and Dabeerpura Darwaza remain.
