Over 8.81 lakh Indians renounced citizenship from 2015-21
New Delhi, Dec 14 : Over eight lakh eighty thousand Indians renounced their citizenship of India between 2015 and 2021, Home Ministry informed Lok Sabha Today.
In a written reply, Minister of State for Home Nityanad Rai said 8,81,254 Indians renounced their citizenship of India in this time period.
In 2021 by September 30, 1,11,287 Indians had renounced their citizenship.
In 2019, the number of Indians who renounced citizenship was highest in last seven years, at 1,44,017, while it was lowest in 2020 at 85,248.
“Citizenship of India may be renounced under provisions of Section 8 of the Citizenship Act, 1955 read with rule 23 of the Citizenship Rules, 2009,” the Minister informed the Lok Sabha.
“The online portal for renunciation of Indian citizenship has been activated in August, 2021. End to end processing of renunciation applications is carried out in the online Citizenship Module,” he said.(UNI)
