Oppn MPs move privilege motion against nominated RS member Ranjan Gogoi
New Delhi, Dec 15 :Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut and IUML MP Abdul Wahab on Wednesday moved the privilege motion against former Chief Justice of India and Rajya Sabha MP Ranjan Gogoi, over his remarks about attending proceedings of the Upper House.
The opposition MPs from AITC, Congress, SP and CPI (M) have already submitted the privilege motion against Gogoi.
On Monday, Trinamool MPs Jawahar Sircar and Mausam Noor filed the notice for privilege motion, alleging that Justice Gogoi’s remarks undermined the dignity of the House.
The AITC MPs, in their notice, said the statements made by Justice Gogoi prima facie constitute a “breach of the Council,” as they “undermine the dignity of Rajya Sabha”.
Gogoi, nominated to the Upper House by President Ram Nath Kovind in March 2020, said in an interview to a TV channel on December 9 that he attended Parliament only when he felt necessary, in the wake of lack of social distancing in the House amid the prevailing Covid-19 curbs.
He also reportedly said that being a nominated member of Rajya Sabha, he was not governed by any party whip.
When he was asked about joining the Rajya Sabha after retiring as CJI, Gogoi said, “What is this magic about RS? I would have been better off in terms of pay, emoluments if I had been a chairman of a tribunal.”(UNI)
