No precise timing for Turkey’s potential SCO entry is stated by the Kremlin.
MOSCOW, JULY 12 : The expansion of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) is constantly on the agenda, but there is no exact date yet for Turkey’s accession to the organization, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Friday.
On Thursday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told a news conference in Washington that Ankara aims to become a permanent member state of the SCO.
“Many countries are showing interest in the SCO, and this topic is constantly on the agenda. There are no exact dates yet,” Peskov said, answering a question about the possible dates for Turkey’s accession to the SCO.
Turkey’s position as a NATO member is contradictory to the SCO, so this should be discussed, the spokesman added.
“Indeed, we are aware of Turkey’s intention to join the SCO. There are certain contradictions related to the obligations and position on the fundamental principles of Turkey as a member of NATO … and with the worldview that is enshrined in the founding documents of the SCO. There are certain topics for discussion,” Peskov said.(UNI)
