MLC polls: BJP wins 4 seats in Maharashtra

Nagpur, Dec 14: The BJP has won 4 out of the 6 seats in the MLC polls in Maharashtra, officials informed here Tooday.

Chandrashekhar Bawankule of the BJP won the election from Nagpur.

In the Akola-Buldhana-Washim local constituency, BJP’s Vasant Khandelwal wrested the seat from the Shiv Sena.

He defeated three term legislstor and Shiv Sena nominee Gopikishan Bajoria by 109 votes.

With Tuesday’s results BJP won 4 seats while Congress and Shiv Sena one each.

Earlier, two candidates of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and one each of the Shiv Sena and the Congress were elected unopposed to the biennial elections to the state legislative council.

From Mumbai, Shiv Sena’s Sunil Shinde and BJP’s Rajhans Singh were elected unopposed after Congress leader Suresh Kopparkar, who filed his nomination as an independent, withdrew his nomination.

From Kolhapur, Congress candidate and Minister of State for Home Satej Patil was declared as elected unopposed after the BJP candidate, Amal Mahadik, withdrew his nomination.

From Dhule-Nandurbar, the BJP’s Amrish Patel was elected unopposed after Congress candidate Gaurav Wani withdrew his nomination.

The Maha Vikas Aghadi(MVA) suffered a big setback as the Congress, just a day before the election, changed the pre-decided candidate and extended support to an independent one.

Meanwhile, Senior BJP leader and former Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis hailed his party’s victory in Nagpur and Akola in the state legislative council elections. The polls for which were held on December 10.

“Both these victories are special and results of hard work of every karyakarta. With these victories from Nagpur and Akola by great margins, once again, BJP in Maharashtra proves its mettle in these MLC elections,” Fadnavis tweeted on Tuesday.

“Political arithmetic doesn’t mean three parties coming together to secure victory. Arithmetic does not work in politics, chemistry does. And political chemistry is with us,” Fadnavis further added.(UNI)
