Low Pressure becomes well marked, heavy rains forecast, red alert for Chennai & 6 dists
Chennai, Nov 10 : Yesterday’s Low Pressure (LP) area over southeast Bay of Bengal and neighbourhood organized into a well marked LP and lay centred over central parts of south Bay of Bengal with the associated cyclonic circulation extendin up to 5.8 km above mean sea level.
Met office in an update said it is likely to concentrate into a depression over Southwest Bay of Bengal during the next 12 hours, move west–northwestwards and reach North Tamil Nadu coast early tomorrow.
Thereafter, it is likely to continue to move west-northwestwards and cross North Tamil Nadu and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coast between Karaikal and Sriharikota around Cuddalore tomorrow evening.
The met office has forecast extremely heavy rains and has issued red alert to Chennai and six other districts.
Under its influence, thunderstorm with scattered heavy to very heavy rain with isolated extremely heavy rain is likely to occur over Cuddalore, Villupuram, Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, Chennai, Tiruvallur and Ranipet districts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
Thunderstorm with heavy to very heavy rain is likely to occur at a few places over Kallakurichi, Vellore, Tirupattur, Salem, Tiruvannamalai and Cauvery delta districts of TN and Karaikal area in Puducherry.
Thunderstorm with heavy rain is also likely to occur at a few places over Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Namakkal, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Pudukkottai, Coimbatore, Erode and Tiruchirappalli districts of Tamil Nadu.
Thunderstorm with light to moderate rain is likely to occur at most places over remaining districts of Tamil Nadu.
Thunderstorm with scattered heavy to very heavy rain with isolated extremely heavy rain is likely to occur over Tiruvallur, Kallakurichi, Salem, Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, Ranipet and Tirupattur districts of Tamil Nadu and red alert has been issued to these districts for tomorrow.
Thunderstorm with heavy to very heavy rain is likely to occur at a few places over Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Erode, Kanchipuram and Villupuram districts of Tamil Nadu.
Thunderstorm with heavy rain is also likely to occur at a few places over Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Chengalpattu, Namakkal, Tiruchirappalli and Chennai districts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
Meanwhile, incessant rains lashed Chennai city and suburbs since this afternoon.
The showers were heavy at times and it threw normal life out of gear.(UNI)
