Lok Sabha Speaker revokes suspension of MPs

New Delhi, Aug 1 : The suspension of four Congress MPs in the Lok Sabha was revoked on Monday, with Speaker Om Birla saying the opposition has assured they will not display placards in the House any more.

On Monday, even as a debate on price rise was listed, the House saw two adjournments in the first half as the opposition sought revocation of the suspension of its MPs.

When the House met at 2 pm, an agreement was reached between the ruling and opposition MPs that the suspension would be revoked and that MPs will not display placards in the House.

Congress leader in the House Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said the opposition wanted the House to function and said they had to resort to protests due to the government’s attitude.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi said he was unable to understand why the House was repeatedly adjourned over the last two weeks, as the government was ready to hold debates on all issues.

Joshi moved a resolution to revoke the suspension of the MPs which was approved by the House.

Four Congress MPs — Manickam Tagore, Ramya Haridas, T N Prathapan and S Jothimani — were suspended from the House for this session for showing placards.

The Monsoon Session, which started on July 18, saw several disruptions in the first two weeks as the opposition protested against GST hike and price rise and other issues including suspension of MPs in both the Houses.

The Monsoon Session of Parliament ended on August 12.(UNI)
