Iranian President to inaugurate multilateral meeting on Afghanistan tomorrow

Tehran, Oct 26 : Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi will inaugurate a multilateral meeting of Afghanistan’s neighbours, plus Russia, tomorrow.

The meeting will see the participation of foreign ministers of six neighbours of Afghanistan, foreign ministry spokesperson Saeed Khatibzadeh told reporters at his weekly press briefing in Tehran.

While the Uzbek, Tajik, Turkmen and Pakistani foreign ministers will take part in person, the Chinese and Russian foreign ministers will attend the meeting virtually. Representatives from Beijing and Moscow will be present at the meeting.

However, there will be no representative from the Taliban regime at the meeting, he said, IRNA reported.

Secretary-General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres will send a message to the Tehran meeting.

The caretaker Taliban government in Afghanistan should listen to the people’s demands, and this way, the Taliban can show that they can act as a responsible caretaker which would pave the way for forming a sustainable inclusive government consisting of all parties and ethnic groups, the spokesperson said.

About the Tehran meeting, the spokesman said the neighbouring countries of Afghanistan will exchange views about sustainable peace in the country.

He said that international bodies should shoulder the responsibility of host countries, such as Iran, which have witnessed a new wave of emigration and refugees from Afghanistan.

He also expressed deep concern over the recent terrorist attacks in different Afghan cities, referring to the deadly suicide explosions by Islamic State-Khorasan terrorists targetting Shiite mosques.

Asked whether Afghanistan will have a representative in the Tehran meeting, the spokesman replied “no”, adding that the Wednesday gathering has been arrived at after reaching a consensus.

Tehran has received calls from some groups in and out of Afghanistan, he said, noting that the Tehran meeting will review the calls and take decisions based on them.(UNI)
