HC to hear appeal of convicts in local train blast case from Oct 12

MUMBAI, OCT 8 : The Bombay High Court will start hearing a batch of petitions on October 12 in connection with the 2006 Mumbai train blasts case.

The bomb blasts occurred in Mumbai local trains on July 11, 2006, in which 189 people were killed and 824 others were injured.

The high court is slated to confirm the death penalty for the convicts, who had appealed against their conviction and sentence in the calendar year 2015.

But the hearing of their petitions has been pending before the high court.

On Friday, Special Public Prosecutor Raja Thakare said that he will be making the opening arguments in the case on October 12.

The Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) of Maharashtra conducted probe in this case and arrested 13 suspected members of the Indian Mujahideen terror outfit.

The trial in the case began in September 2015.

Subsequent to the trial which continued for over eight years, a special court under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crimes Act (MCOCA) in October 2015 awarded the death penalty to five accused — Ehtesham Siddiqui, Asif Khan, Faisal Shaikh, Naveed Khan and Kamal Ansari — for planting the bombs on the trains.(UNI)
