SRINAGAR, JULY 23 :  A gunfight erupted between militants and security forces in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Tuesday, officials said.

The gun battle erupted at Trumkhan forests of Kupwara when joint teams of forces carried out a cordon and search operation (CASO) following an input about the presence of militnts.
“The CASO turned into an encounter when the hiding terrorists opened fire,” a security official said, adding the operation is still underway in the area.

The forest area where the gunfight is underway connects Kupwara with Bandipora district in North Kashmir. Officials said additional forces have been rushed to the area to ensure a tight cordon.(UNI)
