Elders demand to stop commercial activities in Himalayan region
New Delhi, Mar 22:Raising a serious concerns over the ecological disbalance in the Himalayan region, Samajwadi Party lawmaker Rewati Raman Singh on Monday said that all commercial activities in this region should be stopped at once.
Taking up the issue during the ‘Zero Hour’, he said that the Himalayas, which have been an integral part of the culture, is a young and fragile mountain which faces a great danger from the commercial activities like construction of dams, widening the national highways.
Mr Singh also said that eight commercial projects have been under construction these days in the region and these activities disturb the ecological misbalance in the region. Lakhs of trees were cut for these commercial activities which cannot be replaced because of the topological reason, he added.
The SP MP further said that the carbon footprint has been increasing in the glacial areas and that has resulted in climate change and large scale of destruction of glacial in the upper Himalayan region.
Referring to the recent flood of Rishiganga and Kedarnath tragedy in June 2013, he also said hundreds of people died and in Rishiganga flood, around 200 people were killed due to sudden flood occurred in Chamoli region last month and still many bodies have not been located yet.
Hence, there was an urgent need to stop all commercial activities in the Himlayan region as these have also resulting large scale devastation.
Some Members of the House got associated with this issue and Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu said that it was an important issue.
BJP Member Mahesh Poddar demanded that the Research Centre for Steel should be established in Ranchi as the major steel related PSUs are located within the perimeter of 100 kilometres.(UNI)
