Doctors at KIMS Hospitals saved 4-year-old suffering from brain cancer
Hyderabad, Jun 8 : A four-year-old girl with a brain tumor which was about the size of a third of her brain has been operated on and saved by doctors at KIMS Hospitals here.
The child Chaitrika also tested positive for COVID-19 while she was being treated for her cancer.
As soon as her results for COVID-19 came negative, the doctors then treated her cancer via surgery and were successfully able to remove the cancer cells two weeks later.
“Currently, the child has recovered and returned home, ” KIMS Hospitals said in a release here on Tuesday.
Chaitrika, who is 4, daughter of PulluriKishan of Bhawanipet, Kamareddy district, had been vomiting frequently for six months.
Her symptoms, besides throwing up, included insomnia and lethargy. Her condition got so bad, she could not even lift the glass of water with her right hand.
As a last resort, she was taken to KIMS Hospitals. Upon diagnosis, Dr Manas Panigrahi, Senior Consultant Neurosurgeon, KIMS Hospitals, discovered the child had a tumor in her brain. She was quickly examined and treated for it.
Dr. Manas said, “TheMRI scan showed that the tumor growing in her head was massive and cancerous. The tumor, which occupied about 30 percent of the brain, required complex surgery for its removal.
While removing the tumor from the affected area, we had to make sure the good side didn’t experience a stroke or we could have lost the child.
Tractography was performed to detect brain movements by MRI scan and as part of the tests, when the kid was evaluated for COVID-19, her tests came positive.
She was treated for the virus under the supervision of Dr Nanda Kishore in KIMS Hospital itself.
She underwent surgery on May 12 for her cancer two weeks after recovering from COVID-19.
Post-surgery, it took four days for the child to recover and she was discharged on May 16.(UNI)
