Democrats desire Biden’s confirmation by the end of July as their presidential contender.
WASHINGTON, JULY 16 : The Democratic National Committee wants to push Joe Biden’s formal nomination as its candidate in the 2024 US presidential race forward to late July to avert a rebellion, The New York Times reported on Tuesday.
Plans have reportedly been in place since May to confirm Biden via a virtual roll call, several weeks ahead of the Democratic National Convention in August, the daily reported, citing four people familiar with the matter.
As doubts persist within his party about the 81-year-old’s mental and physical fitness to govern, some delegates involved in the nomination process want to stop the public debate about Biden’s future during an intense campaign.
Representative Jared Huffman of California reportedly distributed a letter among House Democrats, advocating for postponing Biden’s nomination until delegates can convene in person. The draft of the letter, seen by the NYT, said that its signatories “share serious concerns about plans to hold a virtual roll call as early as July 21.”
The US presidential election is slated for November 5. The main contenders expected on the ballot are President Joe Biden and his predecessor, Donald Trump, who was formally nominated by the Republican Party as its presidential candidate on Monday.(UNI)
