Cyclone ‘Tauktae’ leaves trail of destruction in Ratnagiri
Kolhapur/Ratnagiri, May 17 : After leaving a trail of destruction and devastation at many places of coastal district of Ratnagiri, cyclone ‘Tauktae’ has calmed down in the district and moved towards north today.
Heavy rain, accompanied with gusty winds, thunder and lightning, which had started to lash the Ratnagiri district Sunday afternoon at 1300 hours onwards, stopped around noon.
Even though it had not left a large-scale damage as compared to last year’s cyclone ‘Nisarg’ in the district, many houses were damaged and trees collapsed in coastline areas.
Unlike cyclone ‘Nisarg’ that had caused huge damage in the Ratnagiri district and other areas after the landfall, the impact of cyclone ‘Tauktae’ was comparatively less severe because it moved from sea to the north even though heavy rains battered many villages along the coast of the district, disrupting power supply at many places and a road was submerged under water in Shirdhon of Ratnagiri tehsil.
Rain caused big damage to the district civil hospital where water started leaking from many parts of the building, raising questions over the quality of its construction and causing inconvenience to corona positive patients and their relatives dueto waterlogging in the building.
Due to the cyclonic storm, heavy losses were reported from Jaygad and Mirakarwada of the district, where boats were damaged and a big wall collapsed on parked cars respectively.
After being informed about incident, local civic member Sohel Sakhalkar rushed to the spot and undertook a damage control operation with fire-brigade personnel, who also rushed to the spot immediately.(UNI)
