CTA applauds the US Senate’s adoption of the Resolve Tibet B
DHARAMSHALA, MAY 24 : The Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) has expressed its appreciation for the US Senate’s unanimous passage of the “Promoting a Resolution to the Tibet-China Dispute Act” (S. 138), commonly known as the Resolve Tibet Bill.
Passed on Thursday, the bipartisan legislation, sponsored by Senators Jeff Merkley (D-OR) and Todd Young (R-IN), reaffirms US policy advocating for direct dialogue between China and Tibetan representatives to address the ongoing Tibet-China conflict.
CTA’s Sikyong Penpa Tsering celebrated the bill’s passage, acknowledging the collective effort behind this milestone and expressing gratitude to the bill’s sponsors and supporters.
The bill emphasises Tibet’s unresolved legal status and seeks to counter Chinese government disinformation about Tibet’s history and culture.
Senator Merkley highlighted the bill as a response to China’s infringement on Tibetan rights, supporting a peaceful resolution and countering PRC disinformation.
Senator Young underscored the need to refresh US policy to promote Tibetan freedoms and a peaceful resolution.
Tsering posted on X: “Great news on this auspicious Sakadawa! The US Senate unanimously passed the #ResolveTibetAct, a momentous stride in our efforts to combat China’s distortion of Tibetan history. My deep gratitude to Senators Merkley & Todd Young for their steadfast championing of this cause.
“Thanks to the leadership of DIIR, Office Of Tibet & ICT alongside Tibetan associations, youth advocates & Buddhist centers worldwide-a testament to what we can achieve when we unite towards a common goal. Awaiting the bill’s journey to the President’s desk post the reconciliation.”
The bill now returns to the House, aiming for enactment and eventual approval by President Joe Biden.
