Cong questions PM’s silence over wrestlers’ protest
New Delhi, Apr 24 : Amid the ongoing protest of wrestlers against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Singh, the Congress on Monday questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s silence over the matter.
The party also asked why no action is being initiated.
Several wrestlers including Vinesh Phogat and Sakshi Malik resumed their protest at Jantar Mantar here on Sunday against Singh accusing him of sexual harassment.
“Modi ji break the silence! The players who have made the country proud in the world are sitting at Jantar Mantar against ‘sexual harassment’, but no action is being taken,” Congress general secretary in-charge Communications Jairam Ramesh said referring to the ongoing protest of the wrestlers.
The Congress MP also claimed that Vinesh Phogat had apprised the PM about the matter in October 2021.
“Vinesh Phogat along with his family had told the PM about the sexual abuse in the Federation on October 2021,” he tweeted.
Earlier in the day, Phogat in a tweet wrote, “We want justice.”
On January 19 this year, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra had come out in open support of the wrestlers after they took to the street over the same. Vadra had said the allegations should be investigated and appropriate action must be taken.
Later, the Sports Ministry formed an Oversight Committee to enquire into the allegations of sexual misconduct, harassment and/intimidation, financial irregularities and administrative lapses, levelled by prominent sportspersons.
The Ministry instructed the executive committee of WFI to abstain from managing the day-to-day activities of the federation during the course of the enquir.(UNI)
