BSNL, MTNL being revived by govt: Minister

New Delhi, Feb 9 : Communication and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw Today  told the Lok Sabha that the situation of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has improved and it will be revived by the government. The Minister said this, while replying to a question about BSNL and MTNL during the Question Hour by BSP MP Kunwar Danish Ali, who said that BSNL has become ‘Bhai Sahab Nahi Lagega’ (It will not connect). Vaishnaw said the two telecom operators were in a bad state and being revived by the government. “Because of the revival package given in 2019, the situation of both the companies has improved,” said the Minister, adding that around Rs 44,720 crore have been allocated to BSNL and MTNL in the Budget for their revival. Ali, however, questioned the government, whether it was reviving the telecom companies to sell them. “Investments have to be made to revive BSNL network through the country. The market share of BSNL has grown from 7.5 per cent to 10 per cent,” the Minister replied. AITC MP Saugata Roy and Shiv Sena MP Arvind Sawant raised questions on contractual employees in the BSNL, and RSP MP NK Premchandran questioned the government over 4G to BSNL. The Minister, however, said that the government is not a “magician” and the revival will take time. “BSNL was in a bad situation, it will take time to make things right. After many years, BSNL and MTNL has come into operating profit. 4G has been given to BSNL and the roll-off will happen this year. There is no magician, but we are making every effort,” said Vaishnaw.(UNI)
