Bangladesh flood affects rail-air traffic, 6 killed

Dhaka, June : Flood danger level was announced in at least 18 districts in Bangladesh, including Sylhet, Chittagong, Kurigram and Netrokona.

As of the writing this report, the water level in all rivers continued to rise. While six people have been killed, four of them died due to landslide in Chittagong due to heavy rains.

Meanwhile, water of Padma, Jamuna, Brahmaputra, Dharla and Dukumar rivers has overflowed past the danger zone. As a result, more than one million people of the country have become waterlogged.

Due to the deteriorating flood situation, flights between Dhaka and Sylhet have been suspended. The Dhaka-Netrokona rail link is currently out of order due to flooding of the railway line. Railway authorities said the railway lines in several districts of North Bengal, including Dhaka-Netrokona, were flooded.

The government has canceled the examination to was scheduled to be held on June 19 due to the collapse of educational institutions.

According to ISPR, the army has started rescue operations in the flood-hit areas of Sylhet from Friday. They have continued medical services including dry food.

Two bodies were recovered 15 hours after they went missing in the water of a hill slope at Jhenaigati in Sherpur. Their bodies were recovered from different places at around 8 am on Saturday.

Locals said they had been missing since Friday afternoon. Jhenaigati police sub-inspector (SI) Abdur Razzak confirmed the rescue of the two bodies.

The deceased were identified as Ashraf Ali (60) from Bairagipara village in Jhenaigati upazila, Abul Kalam (33) from Bagervita village in Dhanshail union, Shahinur Akhter (28), Mainur Akhter (24), Liton (24) and Emon (14).

According to fire service sources, the landslide occurred in Vijay Nagar area of ​​Lake City, Fay’s Lake at around 3 am on Friday. Upon receiving the news, the fire service went to the spot and rescued 6 people. Two died on the spot. Others have been admitted to different wards of Chittagong Medical College Hospital.

The Flood Forecasting and Warning Center has warned that the continuous rains in Meghalaya and Assam in India could worsen the flood situation in Bangladesh.

The Flood Forecasting Center said that 16 more districts in the north and central part of the country could be affected by the floods in the next two days. Because of the increasing intensity of floods in those areas, the water level in the rivers has started rising further. At the same time, the flood situation in Sylhet, Sunamganj, Netrokona, Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Rangpur and Kurigram districts may deteriorate further.(UNI)
