BJD demands Bharat Ratna to Biju Patnaik
New Delhi, Mar 17 : Raising the issue of recognition of freedom fighters in the country, the BJD Members in Rajya Sabha on Wednesday demanded the highest civilian award Bharat Ratna to freedom fighter and former chief minister Biju Patnaik.
Speaking on the issue, BJD lawmaker Muzibulla Khan said that many freedom fighters in India have not got due recognition.
“When Kashmir was attacked by Pakistanis, Biju Patnaik was sent on a rescue mission. He fought for independence movement of three countries — Russia, Indonesia and India. A leader like Biju Babu did not get Bharat Ratna… he should get it,” Mr Khan said.
He also said that when Mr Patnaik passed away, the national flags of three nations India, Russia and Indonesia were flown half mast as a mark of respect to the departed leader.
Other Members of BJD also associated themselves with this demand.(UNI)
