Telangana Chief Minister directs large inflows to be stored in irrigation reservoirs for later use.

HYDERABAD, SEPT 3 :  In response to the significant inflows in irrigation projects and reservoirs caused by heavy rains across Telangana, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy directed state irrigation officials to take necessary measures to store the excess water for future use.

The CM and the Irrigation Minister reviewed the discharge of floodwater from various projects and emphasised the importance of maximising water storage, an official statement said on Tuesday.

The irrigation authorities were instructed to store water in ponds, reservoirs, and other water bodies within the project limits. The Sripada Yellampally project in Peddapalli district has nearly reached its full capacity due to heavy inflows from the catchment areas. The gates of the Yellampally project have been lifted to release water into the Godavari River. Officials were instructed to lift at least one TMC of floodwater per day from Yellampally.

TheChief Minister suggested lifting water from Nandi and Gayatri Pump Houses to fill the reservoirs, with water also being pumped to Mid Manair and Lower Manair Dams, as well as Ranganayak Sagar and Mallanna Sagar reservoirs. The Yellampally project, which has a capacity of 20 TMC, currently holds 18.45 TMC.
With increasing inflows into the Kadem project, floodwater will be lifted to Mid Manair from the Gayatri pump. Mid Manair, which has a capacity of 27 TMC, currently holds 15 TMC of water. Officials have been directed to lift more than 14,000 cusecs of water from Mid Manair and release it into the Lower Manair Dam. Additionally, 6,400 cusecs of water will be released to the Ranganayak Sagar reservoir from Annapurna reservoir.

Water will be pumped from Ranganayak Sagar to Mallanna Sagar and Kondapochamma Sagar to fill these two reservoirs. From there, water will be lifted to the Singur project and Nizam Sagar dam. Annapurna and Ranganayak Sagar each have a capacity of 7.53 TMC, and Mallanna Sagar has a capacity of 50 TMC, currently storing 11.43 TMC of water. Kondapochamma Sagar, with a capacity of 15 TMC, currently holds 7.91 TMC of water.

The Chief Minister noted that, according to Central Water Commission (CWC) guidelines, Kondapochamma Sagar can safely store abundant water. He directed officials to store between 18 TMC and 20 TMC of water in Mallanna Sagar and 10 TMC in Kondapochamma Sagar. The CM also cautioned officials to take necessary precautions during water storage.

CM Revanth Reddy further instructed irrigation officials to lift water to Nizam Sagar from Kondapochamma Sagar through Haldi Vagu. (UNI)
