Iran: Zarif, the recently appointed vice president, resigns

TEHRAN, AUG 27 : Mohammad Javad Zarif, who had resigned from his new post as Iranian vice president for strategic affairs earlier this month, withdrew his resignation on Tuesday.

Writing in a post on social media platform X, Zarif said he will continue to perform his duties as vice president for strategic affairs after Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian’s “prudent” follow-ups and consultations and with his written directive.

Zarif said the first meeting between with Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and Pezeshkian’s administration earlier in the day, which included the highest presence of female, ethnic and religious representatives, proved Pezeshkian’s “honesty and courage” in honoring his election campaign promises.

He said he is proud that nearly 70 percent of the appointed ministers and vice presidents, as well as many ministers’ deputies, are among the proposals he and his colleagues had put forward following a “transparent and cooperative” process.,
On August 11, Zarif announced his resignation as Iranian vice president for strategic affairs and head of the Center for Strategic Studies, just 10 days after his appointment.

Through a post on X, Zarif said he was “not satisfied with the result of his work” as head of the steering council for selecting the new Iranian administration’s cabinet members.

Zarif, 64, served as Iran’s foreign minister from 2013 to 2021 under former Iranian President Hassan Rouhani.
