The nation is in a situation similar to the British Raj: Priyanka

RAE BARELI (UP), MAY 7   :    Congress national General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Tuesday attacked the Modi government and said that today a situation like the British Raj is prevailing in the country.

Priyanka, who is here to muster support for former Congress President and candidate from Rae Bareli seat Rahul Gandhi and party candidate from Amethi Kishori Lal Sharma, was addressing a meeting of the workers.

She alleged that the policies of the Modi government are not being made keeping in mind the poor but have been made to benefit the billionaires. “International reports show that today the condition of inequality in India is worse than the British rule. All the institutions which strengthen democracy are being weakened, be it media or Parliament,” she said.

The Congress leader said that Mahatma Gandhi and Pandit Nehru, who fought against the British to strengthen the rights of the people, but little did they know that a day would come in independent India when the government would be bent upon depriving the people of their rights. “Efforts are being made to change the Constitution which provides a system like reservation that has changed the lives of crores of people,” she said.

She said, “Congress has always given priority to development and has dreamed of a developed and prosperous Rae Bareli. When we got the opportunity, we created employment and development opportunities in Rae Bareli but the Modi government either closed many of the projects started by us or promoted them in its name.”

Accusing the Modi government, Priyanka said that Bharatiya Janata Party which is neck deep in corruption, has today become the richest party in the world. “It has taken every wrong path to reach here. It is willing to go to any extent just to remain in power, freezing the accounts of Congress just before the elections and sending two Chief Ministers elected by the public to jail is a testimony to this,” she said.

During the meeting, she reviewed the election preparations and also issued important instructions related to the Lok Sabha elections. “We all have one thing in common that we have always fought against injustice and the history of this struggle is more than 100 years,” she said.

The Congress leader said that In January 1921, when the peasant movement of Awadh was at its peak under the leadership of Baba Ramchandra and Madari Pasi, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru had come to participate in it. “He was arrested for the first time while fighting against the British Empire on the sacred land of Rae Bareli. Since then, the campaign of service and struggle by connecting with this soil is continuing. Rahul of Rae Bareli will now take this journey of 100 years of service forward with your support and blessings,” she said.(UNI)
