“Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra” is being resumed by Rahul Gandhi in West Bengal.
JALPAIGURI JAN 28 : Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Sunday resumed his “Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra” from the PWD Intersection here after a two-day break.
The 53-year-old leader was seen standing on an open hooded four-wheeler to greet the people, who lined both sides of the roads on the route of the yatra.
.
Earlier, after landing at the Bagdogra airport, Gandhi was greeted by party’s state president Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury.
Gandhi undertook the first phase of the Bengal lap of the yatra on January 25 at the northernmost district of Cooch Behar.
Gandhi is expected to travel in parts by vehicle and on foot, nearly 2 km up to Siliguri in Darjeeling district where he is expected to address an open rally at the Air View hotel crossing. Party sources said the local police were yet to permit the meeting.
Congress leader Chowdhury said they would go ahead with the programme at the site of Air View Hotel in Siliguri.
Gandhi’s yatra, which began in Manipur on January 14, is expected to cover a distance of
6,713 kilometers across 15 states.
Amid reports that cutouts and festoons of Rahul Gandhi were defaced in parts of Jalpaiguri and Siliguri, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge a day back wrote to state chief minister Mamata Banerjee, urging her to ensure that the yatra was held smoothly in Bengal.
Kharge on Saturday expressed fear that some miscreants may try to show the state administration in a bad light or disrupt the yatra, as had happened in some neighbouring states.
After addressing the public meeting at Siliguri, Gandhi is expected to head for Sonapur in Uttar Dinajpur in the state tonight.
At the PWD Intersection, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh greeted Gandhi and they began the yatra, in which many people joined.
.
Ramesh also invited TMC supremo to join the march in north Bengal as Mamata Banerjee is expected to be in the region for five days beginning Sunday.
Jogendra Yadav, leader of the “Swaraj India” party, and Hamro Party leaders of Darjeeling also joined the march with Gandhi. (UNI)
