KOLKATA, SEP 16 : “Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer among Indian women”, Dr Indrani Lodh, Co Vice-Chairperson CII IWN and Medical Director Urvaraa IVF said.
Speaking at a session organized by CII Indian Women Network, West Bengal Chapter, here on Friday, Dr Lodh said, ” Cevical cancer is the second most common cancer among Indian women. “
” The sexually transmitted virus known as the human papillomavirus (HPV) is the primary cause of cervical cancer, ” according to the doctor.
An awareness session was conducted for young girls of six different colleges of Kolkata.
” Cervical cancer is a type of cancer that develops in the cells of the cervix — the lowermost part of uterus. It is possible to avoid contracting this virus by being vaccinated, ” she informed the students.
Increasing the number of girls who receive the potentially life-saving vaccine could completely shift the game in terms of disease prevention.
More than 99 per cent of cervical cancer cases can be avoided if females between the ages of 9 and 14 receive the vaccine prior to their first sexual intercourse.
Dr Lodh urged the girls to get vaccinated and spread the word too.(UNI)
