Karnataka Hijab row: College warns action

Bengaluru, Feb 1 : The Government PU College for Girls in Udupi said Today that action would be taken if students violate the dress code and enter the classroom wearing a hijab. Students will not be allowed to create any chaos or confusion in the campus. The entry to the college is only for college students and staff. Raghupathi Bhat of the college betterment committee said students will not be allowed to create chaos or confusion on the campus. Only college students and staff will be allowed to enter the campus, he added. One of the protesting students had said that she plans to go to college wearing a hijab. Six students have been asked not to wear the hijab inside the classroom until a report by the expert committee has been submitted. Meanwhile, one of the protesting Muslim students has filed a writ petition in the Karnataka High Court seeking a declaration that wearing a hijab is a fundamental right guaranteed under the Indian Constitution. The student, in her petition, alleged that college has denied her entry into the college on the grounds of wearing a hijab, which is an illegal and discriminatory action. The petitioner states that she and other Muslim students, on December 28 last year, were denied entry on the college premises and restricted from attending the classes held in the college for wearing hijab. The college contended that the wearing of hijab stands in violation of the dress code. The petitioner submitted that the Constitution guarantees Freedom of Conscience and the right to profess, practise and propagate religion, while reserving the state’s right to interfere with the religious matter only if it involves an issue relating to public order, morality and health. The student argued that her ousting creates a stigma amongst her batchmates and children of the entire college which in turn will affect her mental health and future prospects. (UNI)
