Shakti criminal law amendment bill
Pune Jan 19 : The ‘Shakti Criminal Law Amendment’ Bill, designed to curb violence against women, has been approved by both the Houses of the Legislature said Deputy Speaker of Maharashtra Legislative Council Nilam gore here Today.
If this bill is propagated and disseminated till it becomes law, then a “Shakti Law Awareness Committee” is being set up to disseminate information about this law to the common woman, gore said.
A meeting was held at Vidhan Bhavan today under the chairmanship of Dr. Neelam Gorhe, Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Council regarding the promotion and dissemination of Shakti Act. The meeting was actually attended by MAVIM President Jyoti Thackeray, Mumbai Municipal Corporation Mayor Kishori Pednekar, MAVIM Managing Director Shraddha Joshi, Women’s Commission Member Secretary Anita Patil, as well as MLA Pranoti Shinde, MLA Dr. Bharti Lovekar, MLA through television system. Madhuri Misal, MLA Praniti Shinde, MLA Devyani Farande, Women’s Commission chairperson Rupali Chakankar, Mumbai corporator Sheetal Mhatre, social activists Aurangabad Mangal Khinvasara, Beed Ramesh Bhise, Beed Manisha Tokle, Jalgaon Vasanti Dighe, Palghar Zilla Parishad president Vaidhi Wadhan were present, she said.
Dr. Gorhe said that various initiatives will be taken to create awareness about this Act through Mumbai Municipal Corporation, State Women’s Commission and Women’s Economic Development Corporation. For this, a state level seminar will be organized by the Legislature and Mumbai Municipal Corporation. Posters will be put up in government and private offices regarding the provisions of the Act, as well as the provisions of the Act. Also, videos and short films will be made on this Act, she added.
The help of social organizations will be sought for this. “We will request the President and the Governor to implement this law as soon as possible,” she said.
Dr. Gorhe said that the rate of violence against women has also increased through social media. For this, it was necessary to make this law. The law provides for the death penalty in the event of a brutal incident. Some amendments have been made in POSCO and CRPC. The law is balanced and good in terms of getting justice to women who have been wronged. A fast track court has also been set up to implement the amendments made in the Act. In addition, emphasis has been laid on the rehabilitation of women. Various women’s organizations were working for the rehabilitation, counseling, services and assistance of women victims, she said.
The Shakti Act is a tool for the protection of women. Women’s safety is a social issue.
Through this law, women will get superpower and security will be guaranteed so that women do not want to suffer injustice silently. The law provides for immediate investigation and severe punishment in the case of women victims. They need to amend the previous law. The 1973 Criminal Code and the 2012 Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses needed to be amended. There are different sub-clauses in this law. This sub-clause also needs to be amended. It takes time for any law to be implemented. The Center should make these amendments in its law, said Dr. Gorhe.
All the esteemed members present informed about the initiatives that can be implemented through them for raising awareness of this Act.
