Earthquake of 2.9 magnitude hits Vijayapura district

Vijayapura, Oct 5 : An earthquake of 2.9 magnitude on the Richter Scale hit Vijayapura district at 3.10 pm today.

This is the fourth time that the people of the district have experienced the tremors in the past one month.

The epicenter of the quake was near Masuti village of Basavana Bagewadi taluk at the depth of 10 kilometers, according to Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre.

Tremors of low-intensity were felt in three villages of Basavana Bagewadi taluk.

“The earthquake of magnitude 2.9 occurred at Masuti village. A low-magnitude of tremor was recorded at 3.10 pm,” the centre said.

“As per the seismic intensity map of the said earthquake from the epicentre, the intensity observed is too low and the earthquake might be felt up to a maximum radial distance of 5-7 kms,” it added.

These types of earthquakes do not create any harm to the local community, although there may be slight shaking observed locally, the centre said.

The community need not panic as the intensity observed is very low and not destructive, it added.

Since the district falls under a mild-earthquake zone, the centre is taking all necessary steps.(UNI)
