In accordance with Maharashtrian custom of the delivery of first child at the maternal home, Lata was born at her maternal grandmother’s home in Indore. Her father used to run a drama company in Sangli of Maharashtra, which he closed and later formed a film company.
At the age of five, she started learning singing from her father Dinanath Mangeshkar, who unfortunately passed away when Lata was only aged 13, hence she had to shoulder her family’s responsibility at a young age.
She started earning for her family by singing songs.
