Mixed response to ‘Bharat Bandh’ in Mumbai
Mumbai, Sep 27 : There was a mixed response today’s 10-hour-long ‘Bharat bandh’ called by Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) to mark first anniversary of the three controversial farm laws getting Presidential assent.
Notably, three laws — The Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, The Farmers
(Empowerment and Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, and The Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act — were passed by Parliament in September last year.
The SKM had called the nationwide ‘bandh’ to protest against anti agricultural policies of the BJP-led central government, hike in fuel prices and inflation in the country.
In the commercial capital of the country, commercial establishments and local transport were operating as usual today and the city police also did not deploy an extra security force at key junctions.
According to a police official, no additional security force was deployed in the city.
Farmers’ groups have alleged that these laws will end the ‘mandi’ and the MSP (minimum support price) procurement systems in the country and leave cultivators at the mercy of big corporates.
The government, however, has rejected these apprehensions as ‘misplaced’ and asserted that these steps will help increase farmers’ income.
The Left parties, Congress and other like-minded parties staged agitation in different parts of the metropolis.
At some places, some activists were detained by the city police, otherwise no untoward incident was reported anywhere in the city, police said.(UNI)
