Thane: Fraudster held while trying to escape abroad

Thane, Sep 27 : A 35-year-old man was arrested at the airport as he tried to flee to the UAE after allegedly cheating a Chennai-based car rental company to the tune of Rs 50-60 lakh, informed the Vashi Police today.
The accused has been identified as Sandeep Raghu Shetty, a resident of Kharghar.

Addressing a press conference in Navi Mumbai, Police Commissioner Bipin Kumar Singh stated, “The accused had set up a firm in the name and style of Royal Car Self Drive.”
“Subsequently, he hired cars from the aggrieved company on the agreement of paying Rs 2 lakh/month rent against each four-wheeler. He paid rent for few months and thereafter stopped paying the money,” the senior cop told.
Explaining the modus operandi of the fraud, he further said, “The accused had rented a total of 25 cars and earned Rs 2 lakh each by mortgaging the vehicles pan India without intimating the company Drive Easy.”
“As the company didn’t receive the rent, it finally lodged a complaint with the Vashi police under the IPC sections 420 and 406,” he mentioned.
He told that it was an arduous task to recover the vehicles mortgaged across India after changing their number plates.
But, the police succeeded in recovering 23 four-wheelers from Bhiwandi, Taloja, Padgha, Hyderabad, Jalgaon and Badlapur. While, probe is on to get back 25 other vehicles, he apprised.
Simultaneously, the probe team received a a tip-off that the accused is planning to flee to Dubai. The cops acted swiftly and arrested Sandeep at the airport, and foiled his escape bid.

The police chief also appealed to the other victims of the accused to come up with their complaints so they can be resolved.(UNI)
