UP Govt doing “injustice to farmer” by not increasing sugarcane price: Priyanka

New Delhi, Aug 26: Political war of words over sugarcane prices continued Today, with Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi once again slamming the UP government over the sugarcane prices.

“Electricity prices for farmers in UP have increased several times, even the prices of diesel have increased more than 100 times. But the farmer’s sugarcane price increased by Rs.0 since 2017,” she said in a tweet.

“Why this injustice to the farmers,”? she added.

On Wednesday, she slammed the Uttar Pradesh government for not increasing sugarcane prices for the last three years, and cited the example of Punjab, which hiked it yesterday.

“The BJP government in Uttar Pradesh, which came with a promise of Rs 400 per quintal for sugarcane, has not raised a single penny on the prices for the last three years,” Priyanka Gandhi said in a tweet on Wednesday.

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Tuesday approved a hike of Rs 35 per quintal in the state agreed price (SAP) for sugarcane crop.

The farmers will now get Rs 360 per quintal. The decision was taken after protests by farmers, and a series of meetings between the government and farmers.

After the announcement, the Samyukt Kisan Morch, an umbrella body of farmer organisation participating in protests against new farm laws, said farmers agreed to the hike.

A statement by SKM said it was a “historical achievement” for the farmers.(UNI)
