Qatar special envoy meets Taliban leaders, Karzai, others in Kabul
Kabul, Aug 25: Qatar’s special envoy Mutlaq bin Majed Al-Qahtani has been meeting with a cross-section of Afghan leaders in Kabul, including the Taliban top leader Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, to discuss the situation in Afghanistan and the process to form a government in Kabul.
Qahtani, who has been a key points-person in the Doha negotiations, met different members of the Taliban leadership, including the Deputy of the Taliban, Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, said Mohammad Naeem, a spokesman for the Taliban’s political office.
The Qatari leader also met with former Afghan presidents Hamid Karzai and Abdullah Abdullah, the chairman of the High Council for National Reconciliation.
“We had a friendly meeting with HE Dr. Mutlaq Al Qahtani, the Special Envoy of Minister of Foreign Affairs of Qatar. We exchanged views on peace and stability and an inclusive government in Afghanistan. We thanked Qatar for its continued efforts for peace,” Abdullah tweeted.
He also met with Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, the leader of Hezb-e-Islami, to discuss an inclusive government in Afghanistan.
According to media reports, the Taliban will form a 12-member council to run the country.
Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, the Taliban’s political deputy; Mullah Mohammad Yaqub, the son of Mullah Mohammad Omar; and Khalil-ur-Rahman Haqqani, a senior member of Haqqani network, who has a $5 million US bounty on his head, will be included in the council.
Hamid Karzai, Abdullah Abdullah and Gulbuddin Hekmatyar could also be members of this council, reports indicated.
The Taliban, meanwhile have said they will not form a government while the United States has a military presence in Afghanistan.(UNI)
