Pondy Univ VC inaugurates X-ray Photoelectron Spectrometer (XPS)

Chennai, July 29 : Pondicherry University Vice-Chancellor Prof Gurmeet Singh today inaugurated a sophisticated instrument, X-ray Photoelectron Spectrometer (XPS) at the Central Instrumentation Facility (CIF).
A release from the University here said the XPS was sponsored by the Department of Science and Technology-Promotion of University Research and Scientific Excellence (DST-PURSE) program.
It was inaugurated in the presence of Prof. Bala. Manimaran, the Centre Head of CIF, Prof. V. V. Ravi Kanth Kumar, Professor and Head, Department of Physics and the DST-PURSE Phase-II Coordinator, Dr. K. Suresh Babu, Faculty in charge of XPS and Assistant Professor of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology and the staff members of CIF.
The XPS is a versatile instrument to analyze the surface chemistry of a material
with nanometer accuracy.
Many instances surface properties differ from that of the inside. XPS provides elemental chemical information and its concentration from the surface.
Its uniqueness to differentiate oxidation states of the elements and its distribution along material is a highly valuable for advanced researchers in material science, physics, chemistry, nanotechnology, engineering and biological sciences.
The surface mapping of elements gives pictorial information on the location and distribution of elements. Through the depth profiling mode, the material surface can be sliced by nanometer progressively the corresponding chemistry can be analyzed with depth.
Based on the research contribution from the research scholars and faculty members of the Pondicherry University, the XPS was funded (Rs. 2.87 crores) by the Department of Science and Technology, under Promotion of University Research and Scientific Excellence (PURSE) Phase-II.(UNI)
