Thoothukudi firing : TN govt withdraw cases against anti-sterlite protestors
Chennai, May 21 : The Tamil Nadu government today announced withdrawal of cases file against the anti-sterlite protestors during the May 2018 police firing, except those being probed by the CBI and under the Damages to Public Property Act.
In a statement here, based on the recommendations made by retired Justice Aruna Jegadeesan committee in her interim report submitted to the government on May 14, an official release said a solatium of Rs one lakh will be given to 93 people, who had suffered mental agony after they were arrested by the police in connection with the firing incident.
Chief Minister M K Stalin, based on the recommendations, also announced Rs two lakh assistance to the mother of a person, who had died in prison after his arrest in connection with a different case.
The release said the committee had recommended that needless cases filed against the protesters be withdrawn. After consultation with the Advocate General, and a report from the Director General of Police, the Chief Minister issued directions to withdraw most of the cases, except those being probed
by the CBI and those filed for damaging public and private properties.
Except some of the cases filed against the protesters before the firing on May 22, 2018 related to the issue that are pending before the Supreme Court and a few other cases, all other cases will be withdrawn, it said.
No Objection Certificates will also be provided to those arrested by the police to pursue higher education and those looking for employment opportunities, the release said.(UNI)
