Covid-19: More cases in urban areas

Huballi, May 04 (UNI) More than 85 percent of the 1,753 Covid-19 patients currently under treatment in Dharwad district belong to the twin cities of Hubballi-Dharwad while the remaining 15 percent patients are from the rural areas.
This disparity indicates that the pandemic is spreading faster in the urban areas as opposed to rural areas, according to Deputy Commissioner, Dharwad District Mr. Nitesh Patil.
Speaking to newsmen here on Tuesday at a virtual meeting, Mr. Patil said that out of the total 1753 patients, 742 are undergoing treatment in the Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) Hospital and the rest have been admitted at different private hospitals of the district.
A total of 371 patients are in ICU wards while 148 patients are in ventilator support.
He said that 32 ventilators are still available for use and 757 Hospital Beds too are available in the district.
The district recorded a total of 1021 new Covid-19 patients on Tuesday, he confirmed.
Mr. Patil said that currently there is no Shortage of oxygen in Dharwad District as the KIMS alone has a capacity of generating 40 tonnes of oxygen per day, he assured that the district management has taken necessary measures to ensure continuous supply of oxygen to meet the daily requirements.
There is also no shortage of medicines as the district has received 600 Remdesivir Injection vials and additional supply of vaccinations are expected on Wednesday.
Daily 4000 Swab tests are being conducted following the increase in the relevant laboratory staff, he added.
However, the Deputy Commissioner observed that the mutant virus appeared to be affecting more patients compared to the first wave of the pandemic.
He added that compared to the first wave when most of the patients were the elderly this time around youngsters seem to be affected more.
He observed that during the second wave, recovery time is also longer compared to the time taken during the first wave.(UNI)
