95 years of Basu Chatterjee

New Delhi, Jan 10 : Legendary filmmaker Basu Chatterjee was born in 1927 on this day in Ajmer in British India to a Bengali family.

A master of his craft, best known for using a minimalist approach in driving his narratives as well as in the use of his aesthetics, while portraying the complexities of human life, ‘Basuda’ as he was popularly known in the Industry, made films both in Bangla and Hindi.

His films were rooted in simplicity, romanticism, realism and above all light-hearted entertainment which made his films both fun and rather believable.

The primary settings and topics of his films was rooted in middle class India with a family in focus, their love and relationships as well as moral issues.

Some of his notable Bollywood works include, “Baton Baton Mein”, “Us Par”, “Khatta Meetha”, “Ek Ruka Hua Faisla”, “Man Pasand”, “Shaukeen, Priyatama”.

His Bangla films starred both Bengali and Bangladeshi actors. Some of his prominent work in the vernacular was “Hothat Brishti”, “Tak Jhal Mishti”, “Ek Cup Cha”, “Hothat Sedin”, “Hochcheta ki”.

In his lifetime he won Filmfare Award for Best Director 1978, Filmfare Critics Award for Best Film 1975, 1980, Filmfare Award for Best Screenplay 1972, 1992.

Besides IIFA Achievement Lifetime Award 2007 etc.

He worked with various prominent directors, producers, composers and actors like Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Amol Palekar, R.D Burman, S.D Burman, Kishore Kumar, Mithun Chakraborty, Ashok Kumar, Asha Bhonsle. Among prominent Bangladeshi Ferdous Ahmed, Noyeem Imtiaz Neaumul worked with Basuda.(UNI)
